Well I suppose it’s down to me to buck the trend a little here. After a very drab first ten or so minutes we started beating their press and getting the ball forward really quickly. Grimes showed how influential he can be and linked up superbly with Paterson whom I thought was on fire.
He showed a great turn of pace, desire and energy (even tackled well) throughout the 90 - that would never have happened under Martin so I think a massive amount of credit must go to the manager for this upturn in form from Paterson . Yates ran and ran and deserved his goal but crucially for us we couldn’t get the killer third goal before half time.
The message should have been “press like hell” for the opening ten minutes of the second half - maybe it was but ultimately that must have fallen on deaf ears as we allowed them straight back into the game with a very soft goal and I suppose then the writing was on the wall.
But Hull haven’t won half of their away games for no reason - they’ve spent money and Rosenior as a cracking young coach.
Duff keeps getting setbacks with suspensions (both completely undeserved) and injuries but he keeps battling on and I admire him for that.
Some of our one touch passing was a joy in the first half - we have improved dramatically on that score from last season. And we’ve lost a talismanic proven midfielder in N’tcham and 20 plus goals out of nothing from Piroe plus extra bodies which we just don’t have now.
I think it’s foolhardy even to think that Duff should go - he’s not started with a great deck of cards and some of those are unavailable (full back injuries, Ginelly out for the season and Kukrayovich all out).
The crowd was disappointing and nobody likes to see the Swans struggle but we all have to give Duff a little bit of credit at least to how he’s trying to implement a style we all love (quick one touch forward thinking football which we saw in the first half) with a very depleted squad which was never going to realistically be in and around the top six all season even without any of these injuries and absences.
He’s honest and that makes him much more likeable than that film flam merchant we had bullsitting us in after match interviews last year.
