Summer Transfer Window

Here is my gut feeling - we were correct not to sell the farm to get LOB. However, his biggest impact was that he inserted tempo into our play at a time when we were lacking any impetus.
Watching Galbraith - he looks neat and tidy, and technically great..BUT who is going to set the tempo for us playing forward quickly - like we did at the tail end of last season.
Maybe Franco and Galbraith - but they will need to inject more speed into their game to match LOB.
To be fair, I see Galbraith as the player who has driven and a good technical ability....I feel he will be wasted if we see him as a DM midfield.
The style that Sheehan wants to play, we need an enforcer who can just break play up and give the dimple pass to allow players like Widell and Galbraith to then create and bring other players into the game.

Surprised you’re being all magicdaps about it. We’ve no doubt got to shift players, can’t keep buying and buying, without reducing the outgoings. You know more than most what a precarious financial position we are in.

It’ll take a few transfer windows to get us where we need to be in my opinion.

Galbraith will be superb, he’ll end up being better than LOB on in my opinion.
I’m not. I’m just surprised that so many are being quite OTT about it all.

I absolutely understand the financial realities. But my approach to it would be different. I would concentrate on a smallish core as strong as we could possibly afford, supplemented by our young players and perhaps one or two wildcards brought in for their ‘maybe’ future value.

I can’t help wondering why we brought in Inoussa for example. Don’t get me wrong, he looks good. But it’s a position where we already had Ronald, Eom, Bianchini, Parker. Theoretically Ginelly. And yet we haven’t yet brought in a more central front player. Where are options are limited to say the least (Wales I view as a back up).

I agree about Galbraith - I said so during Saturdays match (not in reference to O’Brien but on how good he seemed). But it’s a hell of an ask on a young player who’s come up from League 1 to be the linchpin of the side.

I make the assumption that we will bring in at least two more. Hopefully three. But until we do, I will not regard this summer as superb. Because if we don’t, then I don’t think it will have been a good summer. I think we are currently weaker than we were at the end of last season. And that’s never a good thing.

I think superb is pushing it on transfers so far.

I think we’ve brought in a good replacement for Darling and good back up replacing Christie or Delcroix.

We’ve brought in two promising midfielders and a promising wing and forward.

But we have gaping holes that at present have not been filled.

Back up at full back to replace Naughton / Christie / that other player I can’t spell. Centre back (whichever one of Christie / Delcroix that hasn’t been replaced by Santos). We haven’t replaced our best midfield player. We haven’t yet found the forward that is so desperately needed as first choice (Wales is a back up replacing insert name of back ups).

We are three short. And two of them are starters. May be we have people to bring in and may be loans, but we started brightly on the transfer front but have yet to fill the most important positions (apart from the Darling replacement).
You’re not easy to please are you haha. I think it’s been the best start to a transfer window for a long time. I think Lissah will be coming in as the other CB. And as for replacing our midfielder I think Galbraith and Widell will be up to the task they look promising. Don’t forget for the price O’Brien would have cost we’ve got Galbraith and Widell with cash to spare for one or two more players. I think that’s a much smarter play. We do desperately need a good CF and hopefully one is in the works. So things definitely aren’t as bad as you think. I think there’ll definitely be 2-3 more signings. And there’s always loans to fill any gaps.

Widdel is the one who will drive us on from midfield

I'd like to see us sign Widdel the centre half, for no reason other than he looked good in his youtube highlights and it would be cool having the two brothers here.

Thank god I don't control the purse strings eh.

To be fair, being the best for a while leaves quite a huge amount of wiggle room.

Happy if it is Lissah as the other centre back. We need to bring the young players through. And possibly Seb Dabowski can do the cover at full back, I don’t know enough about him.

It’s not me saying things are bad, it’s me saying people think it’s far better than it is at the moment. And me also saying that for all the promising youngsters we are signing we need some experience, this is a difficult league. And I would have pushed the boat out to get that experience in midfield. Even Franco is still inexperienced at this level.

In general btw, we should demand a lot. This isn’t a group of local owners doing the best they can any more, this is a group of seriously wealthy individuals, much much wealthier than we’ve had before, and we can have different expectations.

I agree on your view regards paying on a holding midfielder. The position is one where a player makes a big difference for both defence and attack.
I like the look of Inoussa but feel the full fee agreed is a bit more than we needed to pay for a player in that area of the pitch.

Part of me feels that they have gone early on players and in doing so have missed a proper sit down and discuss of a break down of where the squad really needed working on.
That sounds like a damned if you do, damned if you don't for the club. It's never going to be perfect for everyone. But this is as near to perfect as we can expect.

Nothing personal, but this is the viewpoint I just do not understand. ‘As near to perfect as we can expect’? In what way? I just don’t understand how that is the case. We have signed promising young players at low cost. And a strong centre half and good back up.

We all hope they are going to be brilliant but we have no idea whether they will be even slightly good at this level. Because they haven’t played at this level. I understand optimism - I go into every season assuming we will be fantastic, and I will again this season, but it’s as though people are utterly oblivious to the players being bought and sold at this level.

Edited to add:

This is a pointless discussion really. There are gaps and if we can see they need filling then so can the club. Let’s judge it at the start of the season rather than now and fingers crossed they can bring in some strong experience where it matters before the season kicks off. And shift some of the players that so desperately need shifting.

We won't know it's as near to perfect until we are around 10 games into the league season.
We started pre season well with signings but other clubs are now doing their business and that's opening people's eyes a bit wider to the situation.

I think we have done ok this summer. I just don't think we are totally there yet and have a few areas that need attention......I'm sure the people in control are aware of it also.

Yes I can definitely agree with that. I think people myself included are just happy to see things looking like they’re moving in a positive direction both on and off the pitch. I think this year is going to be more about rebuilding, we’ve got rid of a lot of dead wood and high wage players and are bringing in fresh talent. And with the new co owners bringing in massive international interest to the club I think in the next few seasons we’ll be in a much better position financially. We will just need to be a bit patient and enjoy the fact that for now things don’t look as bleak as they have done for the past few years.

Amen to that.

Based on watching the Cheltenham game, Widell is shaping up to be the tempo driver and creative force in the midfield area. He was always moving, spraying passes around but also mixed it up with some little layoffs and spins behind players, little flicks, etc

It didn't all come off but he was positive and creative, and those kinds of understandings will come with playing time together

Yup. You and me both. I've been banging on about him since January. Casper looks all over a top top premiere league center half about to happen
