Not really, most top clubs operate this way. The club thrives on completion for places and if a player knows that if they perform well they start is a recipe for success.You would end up with a lot of very unhappy players if everyone was good enough to be in the starting 11. It’s important to have players in a squad who are happy to fill the backup roles because they don’t quite have the quality of the first team.
Do we want to operate in way that no matter what a player does in training or on match day they know they're only ever going to be second or fourth choice?
