Captain Grimes on his way to Coventry City?

It doesn't say much about Williams that "playing to the strengths of the players available" wasn't the first effing thing he tried to do when he took the job.

Concrete evidence, if even more were needed, that to coaches like him the system is king.

If you're Pep, and you're lavished with unlimited funds to make your bespoke system work properly, then fine.

But this cult of Poundland imitators like Williams (Kompany is another one that comes to mind) that have taken over football is absolutely bonkers.

Asking inferior quality players to implement playing systems designed for the elite is insanity. But that's what they do and it seems there's no shortage of chairmen out there willing to indulge it these days.

And on top of that it's just boring to watch. At least the top sides still have players capable of conjuring stuff from nothing, but watching two teams trying to grind their way to a possessional advantage because that's what they're told to do is almost as dull as watching Rugby.

But even those top players you mention have it coached out of them.

Best example is Jack Grealish. When he was at Villa you could tell he absolutely loved playing his football. It showed. Ok he's gone and won loads of medals at City, sure, but on an individual level he's a shadow of the player he once was. All fun has been removed from him to satisfy 'the system'. Such a shame.

There are other examples as well but he's the one that always springs to mind first.

It's just part of the game to get the Coventry fans excited. If it was Widell's agent posting a screenshot of them heading to Swansea we'd think it was great

WOL writing it was rumoured only 3 players spoke to Grimes in his farewell meet with the squad on Tuesday.

That doesn't read well for Grimes!

Sounds like he threw his toys out the pram and demanded the move as we all thought.

More will come out on that farewell story, I'm sure, but if that is anywhere near the truth that's extremely interesting, and suggests two possibilities:

  1. Several players were upset at their captain leaving them in the lurch mid season, and they were pouting with him.
  2. Many were actually quite glad to see the back of him, and couldn't give a toot that he's going.
If it's somewhere nearer 2, then this might just be the making of us.

We are going to be a very interesting watch over the next half a dozen games. It's the shake up I think we needed.
