Grimes

Grimes is an ok championship midfielder. Fine for a mid table team. The issue I have is when our team see him as more than he is an keep giving him the ball. For that to be a successful approach, he’d need to have a lot more clubs in his bag than he has.

The reason all our managers pick him is he is good enough for us. The reason they go nowhere near him when they leave is he’s not good enough for their new teams.

Yet none have felt strongly enough to take him to their current clubs.

How do you know none asked?

Fulham and Watford 100% did, and I’m pretty certain Russ atleast enquired.

I see a 6, playing the position very well, hence again why every single manager picks him.

Now if it was just one, you could think, ah that guy didn’t have a clue, but it’s literally every single manager. Like I didn’t rate Steve Cooper as a manager for example, but then he went to Forest, got them promoted and is still managing at the top flight now, I called it wrong.

Do you genuinely believe you know better than all of these people?

Grimes was the best we had for several seasons. Downes run him close, but certainly not eclipsing him. Fulton is nowhere near, Liam Walsh nowhere near, Korey Smith nowhere near, and the list goes on. We attempted to recycle the dross with better players but didn’t reach success. Therefore don’t be surprised to see Grimes in the starting XI week in week out, but that doesn’t making him superb.

How do you know none asked?

No one wanted him when he was available on a free.

We all know that every player has a price with these owners.

Over the course of these first 7 or so games of the season (including the cup games) we have seen the good, bad, awful and brilliant sides of Grimes's game.

When he plays 10-15 yards ahead of the defenders he is a reliable player to receive the ball even under pressure. He isn't as afraid of putting in a tackle as some on here make out and his range of passing, vision and execution can be excellent.

The reason he hasn't been in demand from others is the inconsistency of those traits, whether it be personal ability (if it was he likely wouldn't be picked week in week out) or playing to instruction (more likely). Much of the early part of this season he has been spending more of the game as a third centre half which has left the five players ahead of him completely isolated.

Yesterday he spent most of the game around the centre circle where he harried, collected the ball from forward and back and recycled and distributed it in a positive fashion rather than constantly taking the safe option without even seeing what is around him.

It feels like a watershed moment for Grimes, he needs to be more consistent playing like he did yesterday if he wants to break the shackles of how he has been required to play by almost every manager since he first looked a promising player when really coming into his own under Potter.

He has the ability, durability and certainly striking ability to play in the role.....hopefully feeding Ronald and Eom further up the field.

It won't happen but certainly something that could have been experimented with in the cup games recently.
Would have been interesting with a high tempo 2 of Franco and Abdullai with Grimes at 10.

The new keeper we signed has also told people he’s the best player we have, but everyone else knows better of course

He was in the last 6 months of his contract was available on a free at the end of the season.

Other clubs hardly formed and orderly queue to sign the lad.

We've had numerous managers come and go, none have felt the urge to take him with them even though his stats look lovely on a graph.

Grimes has his 1 in 10 decent game, now he's this colossus and will stampede us to glory like all those years he did before or something.. we didn't look like scoring yesterday, hence why we didn't score.. it was a 6/10 performance, and it was empty at the ground
