STEVE COOPER | IT'S ANOTHER REALLY PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE

Source: Swansea official site

Steve Cooper was pleased with another professional display from Swansea City as they climbed to second in the Championship table with a 2-0 win at Queens Park Rangers.

Andre Ayew and Jamal Lowe scored either side of half-time, while the Swans kept a fifth clean sheet in six games to move into the automatic promotion spots.

Ayew opened the scoring on the stroke of the interval, reacting first after Jake Bidwell’s looping header had deflected back into play off the post.

And Lowe scored his fourth goal in four games by slotting home from an excellent Matt Grimes pass to put the seal on a good afternoon’s work for the Swans.

“I am really pleased with the win, I thought it was a tight game first half and we were really happy to come in with a lead,” said head coach Cooper.

“The second half was about managing the game, we felt there would be space to go and get a second and it came off for us.

“It was a really good performance again, I thought we were good for the win. We were very professional in how we went about it and the boys deserve a lot of credit.

“We were good defensively again, we always say defending is about the whole team, so it was a good performance.

“A 2-0 win away from home is a great result.”

Great 3 points but they could have ben out of sight by half time.
Warburton had the measure of the wing-backs ... his players couldn't finish.
Good to see ...

IN-FORM FORWARD DUO A BIG PLUS FOR SWANSEA CITY BOSS COOPER

Source: Swansea Official Site

Steve Cooper was delighted to see Andre Ayew and Jamal Lowe continue their fine form with a goal apiece in the win at Queens Park Rangers.

Vice-captain Ayew netted his eighth goal of the season with the opener at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Lowe, meanwhile, now has six goals for the season – the same as his tally at Wigan last season – with four of those coming in his last four appearances.

And their performances in the final third have been a real plus for the Swansea head coach.

“They are the boys playing up front and they have played well all season,” said Cooper.

“But, in that position, you will always get judged on the goals and assists you get, which is fair enough.

“They are scoring, Andre told me he was due a goal, while Jamal has scored quite a few recently.

“They know the responsibility they have, and hopefully they can keep it going.

“It was important for Jamal to score in consecutive games, it was a brilliant goal and that is what Jamal does, running in behind and getting in on the goalkeeper.

“He made it look easier than what it was with the defender covering and him running at full speed.

“It was a great pass from Matt Grimes too.”

Warburton on Swansea loss

MARK Warburton admitted he had a familiar feeling of frustration after seeing his QPR side lose 2-0 at home to Swansea City on Boxing Day.

Goals from Andrew Ayew and Jamal Lowe either side of half-time were enough to move the Swans to second in the table, and Warburton said: “The mood is angry, frustrated – there is only one stat to read today and it’s two-nil to Swansea.

“Possession and chances are irrelevant – there is only one thing that matters and that is putting the ball in the back of the net.

“Time after time I come out sounding like a broken record. We’re frustrated and angry that we’re letting ourselves down by not getting the rewards for playing good football.

“All you can do is keep working. Hard work underpins everything that you do in any job.”

Warburton played with three at the back, enabling him to partner Macauley Bonne alongside Lyndon Dykes in attack.

Analysing the effectiveness of the change in formation, the R’s boss said: “I think you saw good quality coming into our two strikers in the box in the first half – but you have to maximise that and put the ball in the back of the net.

“We were winning tackles and I thought we looked a good team in the first half. But looking good is only good when you get your rewards.

“I’m not going to sit here in front of the fans and say I’m happy about losing two-nil. But I think you saw a first half where Swansea never really threatened us. We controlled the ball and we moved it very well.

“They were very well organised and we had to switch the play quickly, which we did, and got the ball into the box. We had strikers in the box and Ilias Chair looked very dangerous.

“But you’re only in control when you score goals.”

With the January transfer window set to open in a week’s time, Warburton added: “Of course we’d benefit from freshening things up – even though I appreciate where we are from a financial point of view.

“It will be shrewd business if we do any at all.”

MARC GUEHI | THERE'S NO ROOM FOR COMPLACENCY

Source: Swansea official site

Marc Guehi insists there will be no complacency at Swansea City despite Steve Cooper’s men climbing to second in the Championship table with victory at Queens Park Rangers.

The Swans ensured the Jack Army enjoyed a slightly belated Christmas present of three points thanks to goals from Andre Ayew and Jamal Lowe.

The halfway point of the season is fast approaching – Swansea have played 21 of the 46-game itinerary – and history suggests the teams in the upper reaches of the table at the turn of the year are firmly in promotion contention.

But there are no such thoughts among the squad, with defender Guehi only viewing the current situation as a staging post from which to attack the rest of the season.

“We’ve got a good foundation to build on,” said the on-loan Chelsea centre-half.

“There is definitely no complacency with any of the boys because we know how tough this league is and the turnaround of games.

“If we just keep focusing on the next game, anything is possible in this league.”

Guehi helped the Swans keep a 12th clean sheet of the season in west London.

It was their fifth in the last six games and they have still conceded just 12 goals in 21 Championship games this season.

It’s a remarkable record, the best in the top four divisions in English football.

And Guehi was quick to point out the credit should not just go to the defenders and goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

“I think it’s a fantastic achievement – not just for us as defenders and Freddie in goal, but for the whole team,” he said.

“Starting from the front, this team really works hard – the boys up front and in midfield working together to build a wall.

“It’s helping us build a foundation to go on and try to win games.

“As defenders we have Ryan’s experience and help in training and games, which is fantastic.

“It’s not just Ben (Cabango) and I; there’s Kyle (Naughton) and Joel (Latibeaudiere) when they come in.

“Anyone that comes into this team can really thrive and build on what the boys have done already and come in and feel quite comfortable.

“In this game we knew they’d come out quite fast and they did. I think we handled it quite well; we were resilient, we fought and came away with a win at a tough place, so all credit to the boys.”
