There's a swallow's nest in our porch and they've started fledging today. They're all over the place.
Amazingly, this nest has held SIX baby swallows - 3 left today, 3 still in the nest thinking about it.
Three is the most we've had in any one brood over the years, so six is astonishing.

That’s good to read, I was only saying this afternoon how few Swallows there are about this summer.

Interesting. BrynCartwright said the same a couple of months ago and I mentioned then that we have plenty here in Somerset, possibly more than usual. Only yesterday I saw a group of about 20 sitting on some overhead wires. Hopefully it's just a local shortage and not indicative of nationwide reduction in numbers. Here's a pic I managed to get of one a couple of years ago.

Someone please explain this to me...

I live opposite my parents. Our bird feeders are about 50 metres apart, maximum. In my garden the birds demolish the fat balls as soon as I put them out, yet they don't touch them in my parents garden. They're the same brand of fat balls - in fact they all came out of the same box. The first feeders are identical too

Is it possible that the birds who visit my feeder are a different group to the bird that visit them just 50 metres away? And that they have different tastes maybe? I can't explain it otherwise

Same location in the garden? Distance from house / bushes for example ? Noise - any differences ? Shiny lights? Has to be a rational explanation.

Same distance from house, though mine is next to a high fence whilst there's is more out in the open. The birds eat the sunflower hearts from their feeder btw, just not the fat balls. No noise or light differences. My garden is south facing, theirs is north facing

And you also have sunflower hearts on your feeder? Fat balls are more work for them. Sunflower hearts easy pickings - just a guess.

Not sure if this link works I took this last week on canal by us in Malpas lovely family she had 7 when they where born lost one

Noticed last few days 4 cygnets now left on their own at another part of canal 2 left with mum and dad any expert's out there know why 2 just left with mum and dad

I was thinking the 4 that have left where male the 2 left female
