I see "progressive passing" has reared its ugly head again.

Your semi-regular reminder about what constitutes a "progressive pass":

a pass that's at least 10 meters long and moves the ball at least 25% of the remaining distance to the goal

So, for example, say you have a defensive midfielder who parks his arse between your centre halves for 90 mins, and fires wholly insignificant 10-metre passes to his mate on the halfway line, who then gives it back to him, and then he does it again, he's just completed two "progressive passes".

Funnily enough LOB was signed by Steve Cooper in the Prem with Nottingham Forest, he didn’t even bother bringing Grimes in, he opted for someone better.

He played 13 games in the Premier League, of which he started 6. LoB and Grimes are both too level Championship players but that's their level. But like Adam Armstrong.

One of the things that I thought Grimes brought to the team was his long range passing. Shame that it was basically 1 in 3 games. That has to be the manager instructing him not to give the long ball.

Also see your midfielder who recycles the ball frequently from flank to flank as the wingers have been directly instructed not to take their man on unless they're certain of success. That counts as both a progressive pass and a completed pass in the final third, even though neither have actually achieved anything. Two for the price of one.

Grimes is custom built for the kind of person who spews out endlessly dull stats on shit like progressive passes completed and spent the best part of a decade convincing themselves that Matt Grimes was the best midfielder outside the Premier League, when actually watching him play indicated precisely the opposite.

Grimes is a 6 LoB an 8. Apples and oranges. Despite that LoB only scored 1 for us, which is the relevant statistic.

I understand that the number on the shirt doesn't mean what it used to, but Grimes was an 8 for the last 6 seasons for the Swans. Grimes had one goal in open play this season for Swansea in twice the Games O'Brien played and lady luck and poor finishing stopped that figure from being a few more. My feeling was that O'Brien brought energy and fight to win to the team and that is the most profound difference between the two players.

The stats I've reported are for this season. Under Williams a big part of the game plan was to spray the balls out to the wings, and a combination of Vigouroux and Grimes were used for that purpose. At one stage late in only Burnley had completed more long passes. Under Sheehan Darling was used for the same purpose.

I was about to state that Darling has given a fair amount of excellent long range passing recently.

It's debatable that Grimes was an 8, certainly not under Williams, where he was clearly a 6. I agree that LoB was a better fit for Sheehan's game plan that revolved around winning the territorial battle rather than a possession one.
