Emnes Scores.jpg

The Planet Swans Match Report

Emnes struck with less than twenty minutes left to give the Swans a deserved victory in a game that they dominated for the majority.

The on loan Middlesbrough man turned on the edge of the area and struck a powerful shot that Heaton could only parry into the back of the net to grab the only goal of the game but in truth there can be no complaints from a home side that didn’t really seem to turn up on the day or live up to their billing as the ‘best squad in the Championship’

For long periods Swansea kept hold of the ball and created the higher number of chances with Heaton in particular called upon to deal with long shots from Sinclair, Allen and Dyer in the second half whilst Sinclair also hit the post in a pretty one sided account.

Home captain Craig Bellamy squandered their best two chances firing at De Vries when one on one and with almost the last touch of the game he headed the ball wide when unmarked to secure the win that the Swans so desperately wanted.

The result was no more than the Swans deserved as they took the game to Cardiff who desperately seemed to be missing the influence of Jay Bothroyd on the park whilst the Swans coped without Darren Pratley with strongh midfield performances from Mark Gower, Joe Allen and Andrea Orlandi whilst Sinclair and Dyer were as ever always willing outlets.

It was at the back that the Swans really excelled and the attacking threat normally posed by Bellamy, Chopra, Whittingham et al was nullified by the top class performances of Monk, Williams, Tate and Rangel.

It seemed to be a strange atmosphere for a derby with Cardiff fans struggling to get behind a side who were second best on the day and the 1800 Swans fans appearing to be the loudest throughout the game knowing that they looked set to take home the bragging rights.

And a glance at the league table at the end of the game shows the importance of victory as the Swans close the gap to the top two to three points on a dramatic afternoon at the CCS.

With two games to come in a week at the Liberty and six clean sheets in an unbeaten run of seven, the Swans are the form horse of the division and that could see us in an even stronger position this time next week.

And for the next three months at least it’s bragging rights to Swansea City.

Who are we?

MEET THE REF

Saturday's referee is John Brooks

John Brooks will take charge of his 11th Championship match of the season on Saturday when he takes charge of the South Wales derby between Cardiff City and Swansea City.

It will be his first time officiating the Swans this season although he has taken charge of a game at the Cardiff City Stadium - he was the man in the middle for their 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough towards the end of October.

He is yet to brandish a red card in his previous ten Championship appearances but has shown 31 yellow cards including 10 in his last two games.

30 year old Brooks was appointed to the EFL list in 2016 and has been on the FIFA Assistant Referees list since 2015. It will only be his 5th game in charge of the Swans - the last being a 2-1 win over Hull at the Liberty on the opening day of last season. In that game he showed two yellow cards - one to Nathan Dyer for failing to leave the pitch at the nearest point when substituted - a new rule that had been introduced at the start of that season.

Brooks will be assisted by Nick Greenhalgh and Akil Howson whilst Keith Stroud is the fourth official.

The Planet Swans Match Report

Three second half goals from the Swans told just half a story of domination after a pretty even first half saw Cardiff completely outplayed in the second as Garry Monk's Swans reign started with the perfect tonic - a win over their local rivals lifting them back into the top half of the Premier League table.

The strike from Wayne Routledge was added to by headers from Nathan Dyer and Wilfried Bony as the home side more than made amends for their 1-0 defeat at Legoland last November and showed all the deficiencies in the Cardiff side whilst starting to showcase again what is good about us.

It was a perfect ending to a long week at Swansea that had started with defeat at West Ham and involved the sacking of a manager for the first time in ten years when Michael Laudrup departed on Tuesday evening. The replacement of Garry Monk seemed to have no difficulty in lifting the Swans and the atmosphere at the Liberty as the Swans outplayed and outsung their rivals who spent large periods of the game like rabbits in the headlight of a Swansea onslaught.

Ironically they probably had the better chances in the first half although the Swans definitely had the lions share of possession and themselves created some good chances without testing Marshall greatly in the Cardiff goal.

It was the introduction of Pablo Hernandez though at half time that made an instant impact as his brilliant through ball just over a minute into the second half played in Routledge who steered the ball past Marshall and into the corner of the Cardiff net to bring the Liberty to it's feet in a sea of noise.

It was the lift that the Swans needed and from that point forward in my book there was only one winner as the Swans pushed forward at every opportunity whilst Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a mockery of his January transfer dealings by taking off his three main signings for players who I really don't think are up to the Premier League thus making our jobs easier on the day.

Dyer grabbed the second when he came in almost unmarked to head home Routledge's cross and just five minutes later Bony headed home a free kick from Pablo Hernandez to finish the rout and start the party at the Liberty as the Cardiff fans sat in stunned silence at how second best their team really was on the day.

The Swans are by no means safe from relegation worries at this point but if this is the kind of performance we can expect from this point forward then it won't take long for those worries to disappear completely but without a doubt for Cardiff they are in a run of form that they need to halt very quickly or they could find themselves adrift very soon.

A superb start for Garry Monk as he adds another line to his CV for a permanent position in the Liberty hot seat.

Great day.

Took a peep on Anus' forum, the dillusion continues.
Apparently we are frightened of playing them..and will go to defend.
Jesus wept.

Have they appointed Eddie Howe yet or is Harris now the Championship's hottest property?

Hopefully playing away on a pitch that doesn’t resemble a cabbage patch will help our play

They have a team of giants, but play it on the ground with pace and we will win.
