... in UK. Hopefully a bit of good news.

Someone please explain...since March an average 30-40 k per day have tested covid positive, over 100k deaths, and by the end of this coming March around 25 million will have been vaccinated.
Now I'm no Carol Vorderman but why on earth wont we be in the clear come say June? If those figures are anywhere near approximate then Prof Witty and his harbingers of doom can fck off.

That's 25 million vaccinated plus those who have already had it and are at significantly lower risk of getting it again to any serious degree.

You hit the nail on the head with your comments about harbingers of doom. I’ve never come across someone in such a senior position who is as negative as Witty.

Am just struggling to see why it hasn't been mentioned that come may/june, then nearly all of of uk will have had covid/been vaccinated.?

I'm not averse to the idea of mask wearing becoming more normal, primarily during normal cold or flu season.

Whitty and co are kidding themselves if they believe people will adhere to the same kind of restrictions in the future as we've seen for the past nine months once most people have had the vaccine. It's hard enough getting people to comply now. There's no way that this can go on indefinitely.

Do you think he might be deliberately downbeat to try and get people to behave themselves until those figures can be achieved and were all a bit safer? Doesn’t strike me as being rocket science that.

Because until then we need people to adhere to restrictions and behave themselves for their own safety and that of others. Imagine the government scientists saying now, while 50k+ people are being infected every day and deaths and hospital admissions are higher than ever “it’s fine lads. We’re in the clear by midsummer”.

It may well end up being true but it would be madness to start saying it now.

Am more inclined to think that he and his chums are a little power drunk with a "look at me" attitude. Saying that restrictions could be in force next Autumn is utterly irresponsible without any thought to those millions suffering mental health problems.

I couldn’t disagree more with the first point. These people are career civil servants who will never have expected or wanted to be in front of the cameras on a regular basis while their advice is being consistently ignored or only partially adhered to. But I fully agree about the mental health impact on many. That’s why there’s no right answer to this and I struggle to fully condemn anyone in a position of having to make literal life and death decisions no matter who they are.

Disagree. To a certain extent he has to go with "worst case" as his default, and the psychological management of the whole thing has been fascinating from the off. Clasey is right when he says that shrugging things off now will result in more and more ignoring precautions.

They do need to provide a bit of hope though. Talk of restrictions next winter are unhelpful. Once we're at 60-70% vaccinated or pre-infected then restrictions need to go. All of them.
